City Oh Sigh to unwrap new music for Paekakariki show
The whimsical and mysterious sound of Wellington band City Oh Sigh comes to
Paekakariki in July for one show only at St Peter’s Hall (8pm Saturday 21 July
2012).
Although a relative newcomer to the Wellington music scene, City Oh Sigh already has
a debut EP Like a Light and played a number of successful shows, including as support
for The Books and Mirah.
But the band members are far from musical newbies. This winsome Wellington indie
threesome features players from the Sisters of St Rupertsberg, the now defunct,
sprawling, super group that wowed Wellington audiences 2011 while earning a large
and loyal following.
Since then, the members of City Oh Sigh say they have been hiding away and
rehearsing. With new songs and a rekindled desire to play live, they are preparing to
burst out of their secret practice space and their Paekakariki show will be the band’s
first concert for several months.
City Oh Sigh is a quartet of classically-trained musicians who combine unique
instrumentation with elements of folk and minimalist pop to create a sound that is
difficult to categorise, yet warmly familiar.
The group’s lead singer/songwriter/cellist, Kate Uhe, started writing her own songs after
stints playing with bands (Ladybird, Blackbelles, Shiver Like Timber, Planet Earth) in
New Zealand, Australia, America and Europe.
On returning to New Zealand, Kate teamed up with her old friends, Sarah Smyth
(vintage Rhodes piano) and Catherine Henehan (guitar, vocals and trumpet), and
started writing songs about love and loss, friendship and loneliness.
Here’s what the reviewers have said about City Oh Sigh’s debut EP, Like A Light:
“This is fragile folk-pop for delicate souls, and primarily, one imagines, for girls, though
my masculinity nonetheless feels undiminished as I whistle along to the weightless
arpeggios of opening track Blow My Mind." (Sunday Star Times)
"City Oh Sigh’s debut EP is excellent. Simple but evocative melodies, an expert use of
the cello and rhodes in particular, and gorgeous harmonies all make this a particularly
enjoyable listen.” (Under The Radar)
“Captured within these songs is a wonderful combination and juxtaposition between
nobility, wisdom and innocence.” (Cheese On Toast)
"Like A Light is a masterful debut. For lovers of folk/pop music, this is an essential
release." (Fishhead magazine)
